The most common hair loss disorders are:

Alopecia Areata

  • Alopecia areata is an autoimmune skin disease. This disease develops when the immune system attacks the hair follicles which results in hair loss.
  • Hair follicles are the structures from which hair grows. In alopecia areata, these follicles become smaller and stop producing hair, causing hair loss.
  • A sudden hair loss may occur on the scalp or face, eyebrows, eyelashes and other parts of the body.
  • People of all ages, sexes can develop alopecia areata.  Most often, it occurs in people who have a family history of other autoimmune diseases.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

  • DHT is derived from testosterone. Testosterone is a hormone which is present in both men and women.
  • It is an androgen hormone that stimulates the development of physical characteristics of males.
  • DHT is an important hormone for hair growth in various parts of the body. It helps in hair production. It can make the hair to grow faster or slower.
  • DHT is highly responsible for hair loss in males. Hair follicles sensitive to DHT begin to miniaturize. This condition contributes to the shortening of the lifespan of each affected hair follicle. Eventually, these affected follicles stop producing good amount of hair.
  • Women can also experience hair loss. Although women have much lower levels of testosterone than men, but this amount is enough to cause androgenetic hair loss.

Role of vitamins in reducing Hair Fall

Healthy looking hair are sign of beauty and health. Like other parts of human body, hair also require a variety of nutrients to grow. Deficiency of vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E and iron can contribute to hair loss. It can be improved with vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Vitamin A

  • Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the human body.
  • Hair needs vitamin A to grow and stay moisturized.
  • Using vitamin A, skin glands make substance called sebum. Sebum is an oily substance that moisturizes the scalp and helps to keep hair healthy.

 Vitamin B

  • B-vitamin is the best vitamin for hair growth. It is also called as biotin.
  • B-vitamins helps to carry oxygen and nutrients to scalp and aids in hair growth.
  • Various studies have proved that biotin deficiency cause hair loss in humans.
  • B-vitamins helps to create red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair.
  • Vitamin B complex is a group of eight water-soluble vitamins that body needs in small amounts. These 8 vitamins are thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), vitamin B6, biotin (B7), folate (B9), and vitamin B12.
  • Among all vitamins, deficiency vitamin B12 is highly associated with hair loss.
  • Animal foods are the only good sources of vitamin B12. So if you are a vegetarian, you should take a vitamin B12 supplement.
  • Folic acid (vitamin B-9) is the synthetic form of folate. It is primarily responsible for healthy cell growth. It also keeps red blood cells healthy to support hair production.

Vitamin C

  • Free radicals damage can block hair growth and cause hair aging.
  • Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant that provide protection against the oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
  • Vitamin C is required to create a protein called collagen and helps to prevent aging of hairs.
  • Vitamin C also helps the body in absorbing iron which is a necessary mineral for hair growth.

 Vitamin D

  • Low levels of vitamin D are linked to alopecia and other hair problems.
  • Vitamin D helps in forming new follicles. (Follicles are the tiny pores from which new hairs grow). Therefore, if our body does not have enough amount Vitamin D, our hairs are affected.

 Diagnosis

The dermatologist will examine the scalp and study the medical history or other stressful situation faced by the patient. Examination of the hair follicle is performed to determine the bacterial or fungal infection.
